- Summary
Nicola (Nicky) is the owner of Spot On Dog Training, located in Woodlawn, Rural Ottawa, Ontario.
In addition to her certification as a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP), Nicky has extensive experience in the dog show arena, having shown dogs in local, regional, and national shows, as well as at the prestigious Crufts Dog Show in England. With experience in dog obedience and agility training, she is committed to using positive methods of education.
Nicky enjoys working with both people and animals. As a long-time foster parent with extensive behavior training, Nicky is experienced in teaching skills to children and adults in many situations. She believes that the scientific approach of clicker training is the key to establishing a true partnership between humans and their animal friends, and is an essential component of responsible pet ownership.
- Bio
Growing up as an only child in a small town in England, Nicky’s affinity for animals began very early in her life. She rescued and rehabilitated many species, including snakes, rabbits, cats, dogs, and horses. Although Nicky’s enthusiasm was not always shared by her parents, her policy was, and continues to be, that "there is always room for one more."
Accompanied by her husband, two dogs, and a parrot, Nicky moved to Canada in the early '80s. Their family soon expanded to include three children and a variety of pets. Over the years Nicky has housed and rehabilitated both wild animals and unwanted pets, many with severe emotional, behavioral, and health issues.
With a diploma in child psychology, Nicky moved into the field of child welfare. The Barham home has welcomed numerous foster children over the past 18 years. Nicky enjoys the challenge of teaching children of various ages and from diverse backgrounds how to handle, care for, and love the animals in their home. Her skills as a parent and trainer have combined with her love of children and animals to create a tranquil and therapeutic setting on their farm.
Instrumental in bringing a Pony Club to West Carleton, Nicky spent several years in the position of District Commissioner, and competed at various horse shows as well. For the past 12 years, as manager/owner of Haytor Stables, she has boarded horses and facilitated riding lessons.
The current menagerie includes five dogs, four cats, two pigmy goats, five horses, a rabbit, and several chickens.
Nicky’s passion lies in helping others discover the joy of training their dogs to be true members of their families.
