Through my business, Ain’t Misbehavin’ Gentle Dog Training, LLC, I conduct private and semi-private training sessions in owners’ homes, addressing all types of behavior issues.
Using the gentle clicker training method, I demonstrate how to train foundation behaviors such as sitting, staying, recall, settling on a mat, loose-leash walking, and more. Clicker training is effective for ten-week-old puppies, as well as for much older dogs. It's possible to start training with dogs of any age! I also work with owners and their dogs to help conquer problem behaviors including jumping on people, barking, nipping, and digging.
- Bio
When I was in high school, I wanted to become an animal behaviorist and a National Geographic photographer. I had a darkroom in my basement and read many books on animal behavior. One of my favorite authors was Konrad Lorenz. As so often happens, things don’t turn out as imagined, and I took a bit of a life detour. I became a criminal lawyer, and for most of my career practiced as a violent crimes prosecutor in Albuquerque, NM, and Minneapolis, MN. I had to settle for training my own dogs for many years.
While working in the prosecutor’s office in Minneapolis, I taught trial practice at the William Mitchell School of Law in St. Paul, MN. I found that teaching was something I enjoyed and was pretty good at. It was rewarding teaching law students, but now I have the opportunity to teach pet owners how to train their dogs. Teaching people how to become closer to their dogs is very rewarding and a lot more fun.
In time, an opportunity made it possible to return to the world of animal behavior, and one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life was attending Karen Pryor Academy. Animals trained using the clicker method, or with operant conditioning, are treated gently and with respect. Most people having problems with their dogs, or looking for training, simply want a well-trained dog. These people are delighted to learn that the clicker training method, while gentle, is the most effective way to train. The science of learning is on the side of positive reinforcement—wouldn’t you rather work for a carrot than a stick? Imagine training a dog to do anything you want without any corrections. It will seem like magic.

We teach foundation behaviors such as sit, stay, recall, and settle on a mat, as well as crate training, loose-leash walking, and target training. We also address problem behaviors such as jumping up on people, barking, chewing, nipping/mouthing, and potty training. No dog is too young and no dog is too old for training!
We can also help you learn to train your dog to do tricks that are fun for both you and your dog. Nothing brings you closer to your dog than training together using positive reinforcement.
