While there, Van taught a course called Learning Strategies, the purpose of which was to help students who were experiencing academic difficulty.
A dog lover and owner all his life, Van began professional dog training three years ago. Van believes that to be effective, an animal trainer must be Calm, Creative, Clear, Concise, Compassionate, Curious, Considerate, Comical, and aware that all of our actions, no matter how small, have Consequences whether we are aware of them or not. He has found these principles to be effective when working with humans, too.
Van and his wife, Kim, own Clarity Canine & Equine, LLC. They live at Panangelium Farm, near Charleston, SC, with their horses Shoki, Puck, and Tempo, and their dogs Crab and Sandy. Tempo is Puck's foal, born March 19, 2007.
