- Summary
Andrew’s lifelong relationship with animals grew in part from his parents’ and grandparents’ emphasis on animal welfare and kindness to all animals. Andrew is passionate about helping people and their dogs nurture the bond that is so unique to human and dog. In 1994 the loss of his soul mate Remus, a Border collie from the Outer Hebrides, inspired Andrew to work with dogs. In Remus's memory, Andrew always gives his best to dogs and their owners.

With a scholarship from the Institute of Fisheries Management, Andrew worked and studied at the Atlantic Salmon Research Trust of Ireland, and then graduated with distinction from Britain's first Diploma course in fisheries management in 1979. He went on to set up a salmon farm for Ian Anderson of the band Jethro Tull, and then established the United Kingdom's first commercial salmon ranching programme with Earl Granville (cousin of the Queen). After completing a Churchill Fellowship, where he studied salmon farming and ranching in Iceland and Canada, Andrew (and Remus) emigrated to Canada in 1986.
In 1996, Andrew rescued an abused one-year-old red and white Border collie, Teg, from Wales. Working with Teg's fears and phobias motivated Andrew to establish Remus Border Collie Rescue & Rehoming, a self-financed operation. Andrew rescued and worked with many Border collies, finding new homes for them throughout Canada. His first rescue was an aggressive dog that went on to become a world Frisbee champion. Another Border collie, Penny, was trained as a companion and assistant for a boy with autism.
Andrew earned a diploma with distinction in kennel management from the Animal Care College In Ascot, Berkshire, England in 1998, and went on to become a charter member of the Institute for Animal Care Education. In 2001, Andrew became the first trainer in Canada to pass the first CPDT exam, and completed an internship in animal training and behaviour in New York as well.
Andrew has served two separate terms as a director for the Saint John Animal Rescue League, and remains an active member. He attends conferences, seminars, and workshops regularly, and stays up-to-date with the latest developments in behavioural science.
