Dr. Susan Brown is a well-known exotic animal veterinarian. After selling her practice, Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital, in 2004, she decided to spend the next five years studying animal behavior, applied behavior analysis, and positive methods of training.
During her 40 years as an exotic animal veterinarian, Dr. Brown saw the need to not only heal animal bodies, but their minds and emotional states as well. She worked with rescues that covered a wide range of species of animals and noted that the most common reason people gave up their pets was for behavior problems. Dr. Brown studied behavior science and applied behavior analysis and learned effective and humane training methods. She is a proud November, 2010 graduate of Karen Pryor Academy.
In 2010, Dr. Brown started a new business, The Behavior Connection, devoted to empowering people and animals through the science of behavior and the art of training. She has personally trained a wide variety of species, including her own menagerie that includes dogs, cats, parrots, doves, rats, tortoises, camelids, chickens, ducks, and goats. Her goal with The Behavior Connection is to empower people to set up appropriate environments for their animals, to observe and understand behavior and how to modify it, and to communicate with their animals in a manner that prevents future behavior problems from developing. It is Dr. Brown’s wish that graduates of her classes form a supportive network, regardless of the species under their care, to work with each other to the betterment of the lives of the animals with which they live.
