My childhood dream was to become an animal trainer for films. Nobody took this dream seriously, however.
In 2013, my Yorkie, Indie, developed fear aggression toward other dogs through a series of unfortunate events. I began to really look into dog training to help him overcome his issues. The first trainer I contacted for help was a traditional aversive trainer who, despite his best interest in helping us, only amplified the issue. While I was taking part in those obedience classes, I discovered clicker training on YouTube. I ended up training all the behaviours for class with the clicker at home! Next I got in touch with a local force-free trainer who showed us that there were other methods out there to help my dog. This meeting really kick-started our clicker training journey.
After spending a few years attending various seminars on dog behaviour, I discovered the KPA Dog Trainer Professional program in the UK. In early 2015, with the support of my husband, my dog and I applied, were accepted, and now Indie and I are Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partners!
All the skills and knowledge I have learned from the program is what I really want to pass on to other desperate owners with dogs that have issues like my dog did. I know the feeling of loneliness and failure when your dog isn't acting like the other dogs in the park. I want to spread the word that there is support out there!
I am currently working at Just Dogs Shop in Edinburgh, in conjunction my own business, Wells Trained. My aim is to provide extensive pre-puppy advice and puppy-raising support in order to prevent behaviour problems. Behaviour problems can be prevented through appropriate socialisation and effective training skills.
In Edinburgh I offer private consultations for new puppy owners, as well as for dog owners who are struggling with their dogs' individual issues. I also offer group classes for puppies and adult dogs. I am in the process of introducing advanced clicker training classes and one-off workshops on various topics.
