Learning Goals I Shelter

Shelter Training & Enrichment is designed to give you all the knowledge and skills you need to create and maintain a shelter training and enrichment program from the ground up. You do not need any previous training or behavior knowledge.

Upon completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Overcome common challenges to setting up a shelter training program, such as time, money, and space
  • Teach new behaviors using three common techniques of getting behavior started: capturing, targeting, and shaping
  • Select appropriate cues and add cues to behaviors you teach
  • Recognize stress in both dogs and cats within a shelter environment
  • Train behaviors that will help make shelter animals more adoptable, reduce their stress, and improve their quality of life
  • Reduce the level of barking in a kennel using simple training techniques
  • Maximize limited space for a shelter training program
  • Organize training volunteers and keep them motivated
  • Set up, acquire the materials for, and maintain an enrichment program in a shelter
  • Implement several low-cost ideas for food enrichment, social contact, toys, and exercise/play for shelter dogs and cats
  • Identify and help solve some behavior issues commonly seen in shelters
  • Help boost the number of successful, permanent adoptions and reduce the number of animals being returned
